artificial pancreas to control diabetes

Science, innovation and research are a subject of great interest for people with diabetes, since their development depends on the possibility of making progress that contributes to a significant improvement in their quality of life. In this regard, in order to report directly to approximately 6,000,000 people with this pathology and their families, the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE) in 2018 launched an innovative project to disseminate information and scientific materials called "Noticia ConCiencia", providing the latest research pathology for people with diabetes. As Andoni Lorenzo, President of FEDE, explained, “the term“ conscience ”in its Latin origin means“ conscience ”, which means sharing knowledge, and this is exactly what we want to promote in this project. We believe that it is important to convey to people with diabetes in a simple and intimate way that science develops to meet their needs and improve their quality of life. ”

After 12 months of this launch, FEDE developed a rating of the 12 most prominent news stories that aroused the greatest interest in the development of an artificial pancreas to control diabetes, which could become a reality next year. In this sense, the person in charge of the clinic of the Endocrinological Hospital of Barcelona announced the latest advances in the development of a “system designed to automatically control glucose levels using mathematical algorithms that can interpret glucose indicators and its fluctuations, in addition to automatic insulin infusion decisions without patient intervention ".

Secondly, the information on the first drug, which announced the “cure potential of type 1 diabetes,” was emphasized as a result of a group of scientists led by members of the Andalusian Center for Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (Cabimer). Thanks to their research, they have advanced in the development of a treatment method that can replace the population of pancreatic beta cells responsible for insulin production; and reduce the autoimmune response, which in people with type 1 diabetes is responsible for its destruction. As Cabimer founder Bernat Soria explained, “in order to cure diabetes, we must do both: produce cells that replace those that do not work and stop the cause”.

Third place in this particular ranking was taken by News ConCiencia, which described in detail the dangerous combination of diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle. From the Di @ betes study, it became clear that a sedentary lifestyle is more common among people with diabetes than among people without this disease, which reflects the negative role it can play in the development of pathology in cases of type 2 diabetes as in the control of diabetes , generally. Therefore, medical professionals recommend regular exercise, both aerobic and strength training, as a supplement to a healthy diet and good adherence to prescribed pharmacological treatment.

These are just three of the 12 news items in this ranking prepared by FEDE, based on the interest shown in the information published as part of the ConCiencia News initiative, which can be fully found on the FEDE website.
