(CNN) – Perhaps it's time to greet Starfleet and see if they set up a base on Mars.
NASA Mars reconnaissance imagined a strange chevron on the Martian surface, resembling the Star Trek symbol of Star Trek, a space exploration, diplomacy, research, defense and peacekeeping organization.
But how did it end up on the Red Planet?
Forms were found in the southeastern part of Mars in Hellas Planitia, created by wind, lava and dunes. At some point in the Martian history, the crescent-shaped dunes were in the area. The eruption sent lava, moving around the dunes, but not covering them. When the lava cooled, the dunes pointed to the islands.
But they were still dunes, so the wind could move them, and the dunes essentially migrated. Their footprints, called "cast of the dunes", remained in the lava field.
So no, this is not alien habitat or Starfleet base – unless the United Federation of Planets has an explanation.
