Rapper Kanye West donated $ 150,000 to a memorial fundraising site for a guard filmed by an officer in his hometown of Chicago.
The West gave GoFundMe through a page to raise money for the funeral of Jemal Roberson, 26, far in excess of the goal. This was confirmed by Bart Jackson, a representative of GoFundMe.
“Unfortunately, Jemel’s life was tragically and unexpectedly interrupted this morning when he tried to save others from senseless violence,” wrote the author of the page on behalf of mother Roberson.
How he was killed
Roberson was shot and killed by an officer from Midlothian, Illinios, while he was detaining a militant outside Manni’s blue hall, where he worked, according to a federal lawsuit. Witnesses said the alleged gunman returned to the bar after security asked him and several drunken men to leave, reports CNN-affiliate WGN.
The response officer shot Roberson dead in his direction, giving him "several verbal commands to lower the pistol and get on the ground," according to a statement filed by the Illinois State Police, citing witnesses.
Roberson's mother, Beatrice Roberson, sued over $ 1 million, indicating the unnamed defendant and the village of Midlothian as defendants.
Breach after murder
Many of them expressed outrage and concern about the alleged racial bias in this latter case, when the police killed a black man.
US Senator Corey Booker, D-New Jersey, tweeted: "Words cannot begin to describe my horror and indignation."
US Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, called the shooting "heartbreaking."
Actress Gabrielle Union also tweeted, saying that Roberson was brave and that "his life was caught."
“My child lost his father, his hero.” Avonte Buze, the mother of Roberson’s son, told CNN to a WLS partner. "Jemel loved his children so much."
