Fifty-eight people were killed in the attack, making it the most deadly mass execution in modern US history. Gervais's death could potentially be the 59th death, depending on the outcome of the autopsy.
Gervais, who suffered a spinal injury and was recovering at a medical facility in Redlands, California, died on Friday, the coroner said in a statement on Monday.
The statement said that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and method of death.
Gervais went to the festival with two other friends, one of whom was killed during the shooting, Sarvela told KPTV.
Sarvela said the night before the festival that Gervais had told her that she was ready to sell her business, retire and enjoy her life, KPTV reported. “She worked her life and backtracked, just to enjoy, you know, and she does not understand, she has no such chance,” said Sarvela.
She said that Gervais was in pain, despite the fact that during the shooting he was paralyzed from neck to head, the branch said. “It was still scrap because it used exploding bullets,” Sarvela explained.
Her sister said she was comforted by the idea that Gervais could join her late husband, who died in 2000.
“I also know that she really, really missed her husband, and that gives me hope – she is with him now,” said Sarvela.
