The successor to the 718 Cayman could be the next electric car in the Porsche model line.
Porsche management noted that the all-electric 718 Cayman successor is currently the preferred option and that a formal decision on this car will be made within the next 12 months.
The German automaker wants 50% of its sales to electric cars or electrified cars by 2025.
The Porsche Taycan electric car, introduced on September 4, is the brand's first electric car, and by 2022 a fully electric Macan should appear. Porsche is now turning their attention to electrifying a range of sports cars, and the next-generation 718 Cayman looks set to switch to renewable energies.
“In the sports car segment, we need to think about a clean electric car. [Электрический] 911 will be too complicated. But for 718, I think it would be a very good step into the future. The new product can get a completely new platform, which we will share with other brands in the future, ”said Lutz Meshke, Porsche Deputy Chairman of the Board.
Although SUV sales dominate, Lutz said it was important for Porsche to maintain its position in the premium sports car market, even if it was electric cars. Prototypes testing “various battery concepts” and “body styles” are currently undergoing final evaluation at Porsche before a “formal” decision is made.
