TEST: Google Home Mini – A sleek and smart home speaker with voice

Product tested: Google Home Mini
price: SEK 549 in the web room.

When Google Smart Speaker was launched in Sweden, we quickly reviewed Google Home. But the fact is that the company did not release one – without two variants of its homely announcer. The mini version fell a bit between the chairs, but now it's time to check it out too.

With a price tag of $ 550, the Google Home Mini is the absolute gateway for those who want to start voice control of their home. The speaker is also incredibly small and easily placed in all homes, forcing the more serious smart home enthusiasts to learn to use it more like a long time to comfortably express voice commands in all rooms without a cry. As well as additional pucks in the net.

Design: elite and style

Google Home Mini is incredibly small and beautiful. Especially to the height, where it measures 4.2 centimeters. Like his older sister's shoes, the design and choice of material is tudelate, but here the lower part is made of plastic and the upper part is covered with fabric. It can be chosen in three different colors; light gray, dark gray or coral. The flat design makes the Home Home Mini very suitable for wall mounting, but such brackets can be purchased separately. The small size made the Home Mini even more relevant if you can turn on the battery to turn it on, but not.

Google Home Mini
The Google Home Mini is really small and beautiful. Here with a tiny candle for comparison.

Here we also get a touch control on the top of the device to control the volume, as well as to start / pause the music and turn off the alarm call. To cope with these functions, we must press on the right or left side from the top, which is difficult to process smoothly. It often happens that the touch is not recorded, and it is difficult to get any indication of what is the optimal “nap”.

A power cord is connected to the back of the device, and a controller for turning off the microphone is next to it. The LEDs, which show that the Home Mini is tapping us, are hidden under the top cover of the fabric and look a bit more complicated than in the larger Google house.

Sound and Voice Activation: Mixed Composite

Perhaps the biggest weakness in the Google Home Mini is sound. This, however, goes 360 degrees and sounds quite normal for those who just want to play low-key music on the kitchen table, but for heavier information this is not enough. The more we raise the volume, the more mediocre the sound that appears. In addition, in the database there is no print and shades, reproduced in the "normal" Google House.

Google Home Mini
The Google Home Mini is a pretty good listener, but the musical sound is far from perfect.

With that said, it sounds better than many of the other pits that we tested, especially when the Home Mini fits in the middle of a room. We have a test unit in the bedroom, which is easily filled with half sound. Best of all, if you connect to at least several louder speakers, for example, using Chromecast Audio. In any case, anyone who wants to listen to music should look at a multilingual path that can be done without problems in the Google Home application.

Like the Google Home, the Home Mini has two microphones for voice switching. They work about equally well, and only in some cases it is difficult for us to attract the attention of the speaker. More difficult is the fact that the Swedish assistant still answers “I can't help you than this,” too often when we ask to control the lighting. Often we have to formulate the phrase in the right, direct way. It will be better with time and does not apply to the home mini specifically – without all the assistants we have tested so far.

Who will buy the Google Home Mini?

At least, at least Google, as we know, is the cheapest option for those who want to try out voice control at home. And only home control, he is as competent as the larger version. The second audience is users who already have a good audio system, where the Chromecast is either embedded or purchased as Chromecast Audio. You can also control via Bluetooth.

Here you can see the slider to turn off the microphone.

Only more than 500 dollars will not dig deep holes in someone's wallet, and in the Google Home Mini you are not very likely to buy.

overview

If you meet any of the above criteria, we can definitely recommend the Home Mini. You who are waiting to listen to high quality music will be disappointed. See the Whistle on what it is; addition or your first triple step in a voice controlled house.
