Bluetooth 5.1 worldwide, allowing you to locate up to centimeters

The standard is complete, currently available for developers.

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has completed the specification of the new Bluetooth standard. In particular, version 5.1, the main innovation of which is a significant improvement in localization capabilities, points to the Neowin site.

For many years, mobile devices have relied on localization, in particular thanks to GPS. However, this technology is not the only one that allows you to determine your location, for example, using Wi-Fi. He also wants to help with Bluetooth 5.1.

Bluetooth 5.1 also determines the angle at which the object is from the transmitter.

Measuring the intensity of the signal, it was possible to determine the approximate position even with the help of Bluetooth, but the new version should significantly improve localization. Using Bluetooth 5.1, it will be possible to determine the position with an accuracy of a centimeter. In addition, it is not limited to measuring the distance to a given object, but it can also determine the direction in which the object is from the transmitter.

More accurate localization is achieved by measuring the phase of the electromagnetic waves at the receiver antennas or at the same receiving antenna when transmitting from several transmitter antennas.

This feature can be used, for example, in the interior, where it can navigate through visitors during tours or help track down lost electronics. Due to the shorter range than GPS, GPS Bluetooth 5.1 will not be able to move by car or other vehicles outside.

New technology is already available for developers. When manufacturers implement this on their devices, it is too early to predict. Slowly, Bluetooth 5.0 still extends to mobile devices. A complete analysis of the technology offers Bluetooth SIG on its website.
