Most of us live in the belief that the air inside our homes is safe to breathe. However, indoor air is sometimes even more polluted than outdoors. Common indoor air pollutants can cause discomfort during breathing, lung disease and exacerbation of COPD.

Indoor air pollution is an important risk factor for the development of chronic respiratory diseases.

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable respiratory disease characterized by persistent symptoms, such as coughing, shortness of breath and production of sputum.

Tens of millions of people around the world suffer from COPD, a life-threatening lung disease that covers several conditions, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

COPD: In numbers

More than 400 million people worldwide suffer from COPD. In India, the expected incidence of COPD is about 15 million, of which 9 million are men and 6 million are women.

Currently, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for about 6% of total mortality.

Risk factors

Smoking is an important risk factor for COPD worldwide. However, there has been an increase in non-smoking cases of COPD, especially in developing countries such as India, where indoor air quality is poor.

Most smokers believe that smoking is cool. No matter how you indulge it, tobacco is bad for your health. Tobacco contains more than 7,000 toxins and 70 known carcinogens (chemicals that increase the risk of cancer) and can damage almost every organ in the body.

It has been proven that passive smoking or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) contains hazardous chemicals like cigarettes, including formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. An estimated 7% of women who use biomass and have never smoked in their lives also suffer from COPD.

Most of our rural populations still rely on biomass fuel for cooking. The smoke emitted by these fuels creates hazardous chemicals that can lead to respiratory problems, such as COPD, if people are exposed to a longer time.

Other risk factors for people in the room are common biological pollutants, such as mold, pollen, pet dander and dust mite particles.

Can COPD be reversed?

This condition cannot be completely reversed, but a healthy lifestyle and proper treatment can help combat the disease.

In general, both men and women are exposed to severe indoor air pollutants, and respiratory conditions are diagnosed 2-3 times more often. People spend most of their time indoors. Therefore, immediate steps need to be taken to improve the quality of indoor air.


Steps to improve indoor air quality:
– Wash clothes often to get rid of dust mites. It may also help to keep the humidity level in the room below 50 percent.

– Avoid smoking indoors to improve air quality.

– Keep plants indoors can be beneficial to health. Various studies show that indoor plants can significantly reduce indoor air pollution.

– Air filtration units can also be used to improve indoor air quality. Using LPG instead of biomass cooking fuel can significantly reduce indoor pollution.

Simple measures aimed at improving the quality of air inside homes and offices can significantly reduce the burden on chronic respiratory diseases.
