Looking through photos on Instagram? This may increase the negative risk of body image.

It's no secret that social media can blur the boundaries of reality and fantasy, but new research shows how young women interact with images online, how they relate to their own bodies.

The results of the study at York University appear in the journal Body Image.

The study focused on young women between the ages of 18 and 27 who liked or commented on photos of people whom they considered more attractive than themselves.

“The results showed that these young adult women felt more dissatisfied with their bodies,” said Jennifer Mills, who conducted the study. “They felt worse about their appearance after looking at the pages of social networks, which, in their opinion, were more attractive than they were. Even if they felt bad before they entered the study, on average they still felt worse after completing the task. "

The study included 118 graduate women from different ethnic groups. Each participant was given a consent form and a questionnaire in which they had to indicate a specific scale, how satisfied or dissatisfied they were with their appearance or body image.

Participants were then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions. One group of participants was asked to log in to Facebook and Instagram for five or more minutes and find one partner who was the same age as they thought was more attractive than themselves.

After looking at the photos, each participant was asked to leave a comment of their choice. In the control group, participants were asked to perform the same task, except that this time they commented on the message of a family member, whom they did not find more attractive than themselves.

The data showed that while communicating with their family members the opinion of the participants about their appearance was not affected.

“I think that in many cases, young women who post messages on social networks hope to get positive reinforcement for what they publish, as well as how women use social networks, are more based on appearance than for men,” said Mills.

Mills said that especially in this age group, from the 18th to the mid-20s, appearance is very important, and women care a lot about how they are perceived by other people. They are also likely to use social networks.

“When we compare ourselves with other people, it can affect the assessment of ourselves,” said Mills. We really need to educate young people about how using social networks can make them feel and how this can even be tied to a tight diet, eating disorders or excessive exercise. There are people who may be caused by social networks and are especially vulnerable. ”
