A new announcement was made yesterday about investing in the large-scale copper sector in the country. After Minera Collahuasi, owned by Glencore, Anglo American and JCR and located in the Tarapaca region, announced that it had initiated an environmental management project for ensuring continuity of work, “Developing Infrastructure and Improving Productive Potential,” which in five years would require an investment of $ 3200 USA.
Thanks to this initiative, investments in the extraction of minerals invested in environmental recycling accumulate about $ 8,500 million over the course of the year. USA, which is 92 projects. This, excluding those initiatives that were rejected or that could not be processed.
This is also confirmed by the new boom in mining projects, given that this year two other major initiatives that have already had an environmental permit were approved by the relevant councils: the development of the second phase of Quebrada Blanca, related to the Canadian company Teck and the Japanese Sumitomo and it will cost about 5,000 million US dollars, as well as the expansion of Los Pelambres, associated with Antofagasta Minerals, a division of the mining company Luksic, which will cost 1,200 million US dollars.
In addition, other projects such as Rajo Inca (from Codelco, which requires an investment of US $ 1,000 million), Salares Norte (from Goldfield, US $ 1,000 million) and Proyecto Blanco, from Minera Salar Blanco (527 million USD) began its environmental treatment.
With regard to its project, the mining company Doña Inés de Collahuasi explained that its goal is to ensure the continuity of operations of the copper plant during the estimated period of 20 years, improving the processing capacity of sulfur minerals to 170 thousand tons per day. (ktpd) up to 210 ktpd, expanding and integrating environmental permits and taking into account an additional source of water supply, which implies a reduction in the use of continental water.
Therefore, the question of the construction and operation of a desalination plant for sea water, as well as its management system and transportation of desalinated water, is being considered.
As for the personnel, the construction of the project takes into account the hiring of no more than 4,500 people, and at this stage an average of 960 people, and during operation this figure reaches 7,990 people.
Good news In the government, they enthusiastically took the revenue from this project. This was stated by the Minister of Mining Baldo Prokuritsa.
“In these last months of the year, we received very good news for the sector. On the one hand, we were aware of the decision of Antofagasta Minerals to approve the construction of the Additional Infrastructure Project (INCO) Minera Los Pelambres and, secondly, about Teck’s intention to start the second phase of the Quebrada Blanca mining project. To these initiatives today we are adding revenue to the environmental processing of the project, which expands the activities of Collahuasi, which reflects the resumption of investment in mining in the country, "the government said.
