American under surveillance for possible infection with Ebola in the Democratic Congo



MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A US citizen who traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to join efforts to counter the current outbreak of the Ebola virus in the northeast African country, was placed under surveillance at the University of Nebraska medical center if the causative agent was suspected.

According to data published by the medical center on his website, the person “does not have Ebola symptoms”, but the situation requires constant monitoring of their status.

"This person may have been infected with a virus, but she is not sick and there is no risk of infection either," said Ted Cheslak, an infection specialist at the university's medical center.

It is indicated that the observation period can be extended to two weeks.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the outbreak of Ebola in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri has resulted in 360 deaths from 593 cases, including 545 confirmed. ; 203 people managed to recover.

The disease caused by the Ebola virus is a serious disease that often leads to death, and the death rate reaches 50 percent.

It spreads from person to person, either through direct contact with organs, blood or other body fluids of infected people, or through indirect contact with infected materials, and is accompanied by fever, weakness and muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, kidney and liver dysfunction, and in some cases, internal and external hemorrhages.

The incubation period of the virus varies from two to 21 days.
