One of the polar bears living in Assiniboine Park Zoo died on Monday.

The zoo said Blizzard, a five-year-old bear, began to experience loss of appetite and sluggish behavior about two weeks ago. The veterinary team decided to anesthetize it in order to conduct a full assessment of his condition, and prescribed him oral antibiotics.

According to the zoo, he was carefully watched, and he felt good until the last weekend, when his condition seemed to worsen.

The veterinary team decided to anesthetize him again to overestimate his condition. Officials said the procedure went well, but when canceling anesthesia, Blizzard experienced respiratory distress.

The zoo said that the staff did everything possible to save him, but he died.

“It's always a sad day when we lose one of our favorite animals at the zoo, but the loss in these conditions is particularly difficult. Blizzard was a great bear, and the zoo staff, visitors and volunteers will miss him very much, ”said Dr. Chris Enright, director of the zoo's veterinary service, in a press release.

An investigation of its cause of the disease is preliminary. The zoo said that an autopsy was performed on Monday evening, and early results show signs of inflammation, fluid in the chest cavity and some anomalies in the heart.

Blizzard has lived in Assiniboine Park Zoo since September 2014, when he and his sister Star were transferred there after they were seen without their mother as babies.
