Community activists kill the Elon Musk plan for an underground motorway tunnel in Los Angeles

Elon Musk, a Boring Company tunneling company, withdrew its plans for a 17-mile tunnel under the 405 Los Angeles highway after settling with a coalition of community groups that sued the city according to Musk’s plans. Instead, the company said it would build a much shorter test tunnel at the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball stadium.

The planned motorway tunnel, known as the Sepulveda test tunnel, was announced last year by Boring, but the construction quickly stalled due to legal problems. The drilling company sought to circumvent the long process of environmental assessment of the tunnel and was able to quickly get to the city on the fast track to construction.

This angered a number of community groups in Los Angeles who sued the city and demanded a full environmental assessment of the Musk test tunnel. Violence from community groups worked, and this week the Drilling Company threw all its plans through the Sepulveda tunnel.

Musk praised the plans of the Sepulveda tunnel back in late October, when he chirped that the first stage of the tunnel will be open for passengers on December 10th. Now that Muska’s dream of avoiding traffic in Los Angeles is dead, the company will focus on its so-called “Dugout loop”, which will transport Los Angelenos to and from Dodgers Stadium and other places in the area. The cycle will be filled with modified Tesla cars that run on electric skates, but so far these vehicles have been shown only in commercials.

As is often the case with Mouss, he promised much more than he could deliver in the case of the Sepulveda tunnel, but the Drilling Company has a number of other projects to focus on.

In 2017, the Maryland State Highway granted Musk permission to build a 12-mile tunnel between Baltimore and Washington, DC, but this year these plans faced some legal issues. Earlier this year, the drilling company also used the mayor of Chicago to build an 18-mile transit tunnel around the city, but many residents are skeptical that it will ever be implemented in a city that suffers from transit pipe dreams.
