Liverpool moved to seven points at the top of the Premier League table when they stormed the victory with a 5: 1 score over Arsenal.
Now they are sitting on 54 points and have not yet felt defeated in the championship this season. Although their leadership is not insurmountable, the people of Jürgen Klopp are certainly in an impressive position, and many believe that they will not slow down.
So where is the electric first half of the season of Liverpool considered one of the best in the era of the Premier League? Here are the seven highest points after 20 matches since the start of the league.
7. 47 points (Arsenal in 2007/08)
Counting “Arsenal” at 47 points in the 2007/08 season will be enough for the second stage of this campaign. However, the title race was much closer 11 years ago, with Manchester United and Chelsea two and six points behind, respectively.
Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, they could not hold on to their position. Four consecutive draws with players such as Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic showed that they slipped into second place, and they had only eight matches left, and United overtook them in first place.
Both sides clashed in the last few weeks of the season, and a 2: 1 victory for the Red Devils led Arsenal to third place, and the Gunners ended up playing four points for possible United champions.
6. 48 points (Manchester City in 2011/12)
Back in the Premier League 2011/12 season, it was Manchester City that was at the top of the league table after 20 games with their score of 48 points, giving them three points in the United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Citizens were the league leader for the vast majority of the season, but a 1: 0 shock at Swansea City in March opened the door for United, and the Red Devils were able to rise to the level of their rivals when they earned a 1–0 victory over City with the two remaining games.
However, this season was one of the most memorable conclusions in recent years, when both sides scored points on the last day of the season. When City played 2-2 with Queens Park Rangers, United's victory over Sunderland 1-0 looked like he won the title, but only after Sergio Aguero scored a goal, and City got its first Premier League title.
5. 49 points (Manchester United in 1993/94, 2003/04, 2012/13 and Chelsea in 2004/05, 2016/17)
49 points were the usual stage since the founding of the league, when United and Chelsea sat on this total after 20 games a total of five times.
United stormed the championship titles both in 1993/94 and 2012/13, but their three-point advantage over Arsenal in the 2003/04 season was not enough to carry them to glory. Instead, they broke away from the Arsenal Invincibles, who finished the season 15 points ahead of United, who finished third.
As for Chelsea, they managed to maintain their position and continue to raise the trophy in both seasons. They finished 12 points ahead of Arsenal in 2005 and seven points ahead of Tottenham in 2017.
4. 50 points (Manchester United in 2006/07)
United's longstanding rivals completed their 20th game by 50 points in the 2006/07 season, and Chelsea was 46 points behind.
Led by footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, as well as the significant contribution of the current interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskyer, United controlled the division for the whole season.
In addition to the two-week spell at the beginning of the season, United was the leader of the entire campaign and did not allow its position to fall, as they finished six points ahead of Blues and raised another Premier League title.
3. 54 points (Liverpool in 2018/19)
The current leaders of the Liverpool League are in exciting form, but their number of 54 points is quite enough for the third on this list.
Having missed only eight goals at the moment, the Klopp side really looks like a force to be reckoned with, and their convincing victory over Arsenal Unai Emery has undoubtedly consolidated their title favorites status.
Then for them a trip to the Etihad Stadium to meet with the City, which can easily become one of the most important fixtures of the season. Losing can explode a title race, but a victory can effectively consolidate the glory of Liverpool.
2. 55 points (Chelsea in 2005/06)
One step ahead of Liverpool with a 2-0 win over Birmingham, Chelsea finished their 20th match with 55 points in the 2005/06 season, despite having been defeated by United in November.
However, the blue ones were 11 points higher at the top of the table and looked at the head above the remaining divisions in their runaway race to the league title.
Chelsea finished with 91 points, and the G8 behind United could be a lot more. However, after finishing the title, the weak side of Chelsea suffered senseless defeats at the hands of Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United in the last weeks of the campaign.
1. 58 points (Manchester City in 2017/18)
The city side of the 2017/18 season may have been one of the most dominant in the history of England, and it is not surprising that they top this list.
Pep Guardiola's men scored 58 points after 20 games, losing just two points against Everton in the second week of the season. A decisive victory over Liverpool with a score of 5: 0 in September set the tone for this season, and City won out.
They finished a staggering 19 points, ahead of rivals United for a second. To put it in perspective, there was only 18 points between the eighth placed by Everton and West Bromwich Albion in the 20th. It was the dominant campaign for the City, and Liverpool will hope to repeat their success this year.
