MEET the tough new rival Toyota HiLux in America.

Jeep removed the cover from the long-awaited two-headed gladiator.

It is expected that the new workhorse, based on the iconic Wrangler 4WD, will join the booming monochromatic market in 2020, taking on such high-tech HiLux and Ford Ranger.

This is Jeep’s first entry into the segment since 1992, and it is reviving the name of the Gladiator, which debuted in the sixties.

The jeep stretched the armrests of the Wrangler by 787 mm to accommodate a large cockpit and tray.

In true style, the Wrangler Gladiator will include both soft and hard versions and a flip windscreen, giving motorists their first outdoor experience.

Power will be produced from a powerful 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine (212 kW / 353 Nm), which corresponds to a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

In a market dominated by diesel engines, Toyota and Mitsubishi are the only major players offering bentomotor ute, and both use smaller four-cylinder units corresponding to two-wheel drive.

The petrol version will be connected later with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine (194 kW / 599 Nm) connected to an eight-speed car. Diesel outputs make it the most powerful in its class.

Gasoline versions will enter production abroad in 2019, and diesel fuel will follow later. By the time Gladiator arrives in Australia, both engines should be available.

All models have four-wheel drive and have a lifting capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload of 725 kg, which corresponds to most of the main competitors.

The Gladiator will also provide serious off-road potential thanks to locking differentials, a landing angle of 43.6 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees, as well as a lateral course depth of up to 760 mm.

Gladiator will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accessible via a 7.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreen, depending on the specification. Inside buyers there is a choice of fabric or leather and various internal storage compartments.

The exterior design reflects the new Wrangler with a retro Jeep grille and headlamp design.
