They discover a new danger of excessive alcohol consumption.

The vicious circle Excessive alcohol consumption can cause long-term genetic changes that lead to greater dependence on the substance, a study conducted by American University Rutgers (New Jersey) and published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

“We found that people who drink a lot can change their DNA in such a way as to make them want more alcohol,” says Professor Deepak C. Sarkar, lead author of the study and director of the Animal Science Department Endocrine Program, who quotes portal MedicalXpress.

“This can help explain why alcoholism is such a strong addiction and may encourage the emergence of new treatments, or help people at risk to become addicted,” he explains.

The findings of the Rutgers University team can ultimately help researchers identify biomarkers (measurable indicators, such as proteins or modified genes) that can be used to predict future risks of dependence.
