A grant of $ 10 million. The US will revolutionize the early detection of melanoma with the installation of 15 3D images for the whole body in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
The University of Queensland Diamantine Institute will lead the creation of the ACRF Australian Center of Excellence in Visualizing and Diagnosing Melanoma.
Director of the UQ Dermatology Research Center, Professor H. Peter Sawyer, said the center will combine advanced 3D imaging technology with a telemedicine network.
"Melanoma is the national cancer of Australia with Australians, which is 12 times higher than the global incidence – this is the most common cancer among Australians aged 15 to 40 years," said Professor Sawyer.
"Early detection is the key to saving lives and achieving our vision of the world without melanoma."
The 3D image system displays the overall body image in milliseconds, which greatly improves identification and tracking of the lesion, while significantly reducing reception time and healthcare costs.
Australian President of Cancer Research Professor Professor Ian Brown said that the grant will contribute to the development of melanoma in the country.
“The Australian Center for Excellence in ACRF Melanoma Imaging and Diagnosis is the world's first approach to improving early detection, thereby eliminating the significant national burden on melanoma,” said Professor Brown.
“By providing machines in metropolitan and regional centers throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria with the potential to expand network across Australia with innovative telemedicine capabilities, this bold project will increase the potential to improve early detection of melanoma and save lives.”
It is estimated that each of the 15 3D image processing machines will be able to conduct 3000 exams annually, resulting in about 100,000 digital avatars for three years.
This large data set will add the ability of the center to inform other clinical studies, including calculating artificial intelligence algorithms to assist in making clinical decisions.
The center is a collaboration between the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney and Monash University, as well as government partners for research and health systems.
Grants were announced at a reception held by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General Hon. Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Redd) and Lady Cosgrove in the Admiralty House in Sydney.
