It is known as a concert on the terrace in which The Beatles played live for the last time. But today, they also remembered fifty years of that day when Londoners looked up and braced themselves with smiles on their faces.
The Beatles experienced a big internal crisis. His paths began to separate. The relationship between them was strained.Success (and growth) bore fruit. The internal equilibrium evaporated, and it seemed that at that moment it was impossible to restore them. In early 1969, they ended up in Twinckeham Studios to record a new album. Once again they wanted to turn the ship. They never stagnated. If they come from experiments and a variety of bank albums published a few months ago, now they wanted to go back to the roots,
The Beatles story can be told by focusing on the group’s struggle to change course, get away from the fact that they began to dominatet. The Beatles became studio artists. And against this they wanted to fight. They decided to prove that they can play without any attributes, with which their producer George Martin translated his wishes.
For some reason they were the greatest artists on the planet. They could also download, make straight songs, without studio magic. how Rolling stones or how Who, More direct songs that show their abilities as translators, that it was not possible to hide the consequences, inventions and discoveriesThe film crew performed all their steps to record in the documentary the process of creating a new album. The project (album and film) was called Get Back – a song written by Paul, which will become the center of LP.
Coexistence between the four became impossibleIn those early days of January, everything would explode. Ringo was worried about his new career as an actor; the group committed to complete the recording in mid-February so that it will arrive on time for the shooting of a new film. George did not feel recognized by his companions; he believed that the time of contempt and postponement was over, and he demanded that more of his songs fall on CDs and share creative solutions with a pair of Lennon-McCartney. John fought a double addiction: the heroine and her new love, Yoko Ono. While Paul, already paired with Linda Eastman, attempted to record, becoming a leader with a somewhat authoritarian style. Working conditions threatened the group’s unstable balance., Recording in another studio, with members of a documentary film crew (and with cameras constantly on), during work hours (not long evenings, like in their latest albums), and with John, always tied to Yoko. All bad ideas, all the triggers of the January 10 disaster. After a quarrel with Paul, tired of his orders and considered a minor actor, George Harrison took his guitar (Fender Rosewood Telecaster, created specifically for him: the guitar took place on an airplane during his transatlantic journey to be protected) and left the office. On the same day, when he arrived at his house, he composed Wow Wow to integrate triple All things must passhis first solo album. There, in several verses, he describes his feelings about his position in the group, his frustrations and the desire to continue on his own: He doesn't need the Beatles to be happy.
John and Yoko suddenly went to George's house for breakfast to convince him to return. A few days later he did it, but he imposed his own conditions. He brought with him Billy Preston, who during these sessions will become the “fifth Beatle” with his keyboards and demanded respect for his creative space. Zimbronazo leaving George (it must be remembered that during the recording of the previous disc was Ringo, who was tired and left within a few days), the inclusion of Preston and the decision to go on record to investigate Apple’s building, they managed to wind down the courseThe songs began to appear, the laughter returned, and the other three seemed ready to avoid the fact that Yoko always remained attached to John as an incestuous siam.
The grand finale of the documentary has never been challenged. It would be a band playing a few songs live. But where should this presentation be? The largest group in the world could not play anywhere. The frame should be up to them. Someone thought of the great London theater, but only with an exceptional audience and the best recording conditions; one said that the Sahara desert seems to be the best option: four lost in the immensity; someone suggested that the framework be the Pyramids of Giza; another suggested that they report to the old Roman Colosseum, located in Tunisia. but at the last moment it was decided that this action would take place on the terrace of the Apple building. The idea is attributed to John (Billy Preston speaks in his memoirs), the director of the documentary film Michael Lindsay Hogg and even Glyn Jones, the sound producer, declares his merits. The truth is that several factors agreed that the last Beatles concert took place on the terrace of a building located on Sevil-3 Street. Relations between group members, as we have seen, were not the best, and a long journey could jeopardize the progress made; times were tense and the budget was exceeded; John’s interest guaranteed his presence if he needed only to rise from the basement, where the recording studio was, to the roof. But there is another factor that is not always taken into account. Less than two months ago, on the terrace of a Manhattan hotel, a group of Jefferson aircraft did the same. At 7:45 am, a dispute from his singer, Grace Slick, woke the whole area, and the band played at a very high volume for seven minutes. The recording of this performance was made by director Jean-Luc Godard, and one of his iconic scenes is a scene from a couple who looks out the hotel window when a girl is wrapped in a sheet trying to understand what is happening. Jefferson's plane was short because the police immediately interrupted her. It is possible that the Beatles used this opportunity and calculated the dramatic effect that the appearance of the London police on their documentary film could have.
When that afternoon of January 30, 1969, the four of Liverpool went out to the terrace two and a half years ago they did not play liveIt was very windy and less than six degrees. To fight the cold, Ringo used a red-skinned pilot from his wife, Maureen, and John, a brown leather cap from Yoko. George also covered himself with fur, and Paul preferred a dark three-piece suit. But besides the way they are dressed, what you see in those images in which each of the four is already what the next years will be like. These are four peopleThey are no longer in shape, with the same cropped hair or with a mustache. On this terrace, several witnesses are watching a Beatles rattle. John has his Lennon glasses, a round frame; Ringo – wild hair and lightness that characterize them; Paul is more formal with his waistcoat and abundant beard, attentive to the movements of others; George does not play any role (he is not the main voice in any of the songs), but he is a bright and somewhat ethereal presence with his guitar. Personalities calmed down, individuals were imposed, and the group broke up. Four is ready to start your journeyThis is implacable. On the set, some tension is felt on their faces before the start. Paul is jumping in place to warm up. Around them, only the film crew, their wives and managers, as well as Apple employees.
The performance lasted a little over forty minutes, but the film still has 22 minutes (the rest of the frames from the same songs). Director Michael Lindsay Hogg did an extraordinary job. He arranged five chambers on the terraceanother one on the eastern roof, another one on the street and another one hidden in the reception building.
Let us stop for a second with the director, who also has a wonderful story: he made his career as a director of musical films (he also worked with the Rolling Stones and The Who) and was one of the pioneers of video clips. But what interests us is their affiliation. This ability may have been genetic. It is believed that his father was Orson Welles, although he was never able to prove himself even with the help of a DNA study conducted by Wells's daughter.
The Beatles began with Get Back. They sound blurry and in shape. There are no blunders, and with the development of interpretation they are released. Enjoy. Although it was rumored that this song, one of his poems, was another cause of internal controversy. Legend has it that John was upset when Paul, in the studio, looked at Yoko every time he said the phrase: “Go back to where you once belonged"(Go back to the place where you once lived.) Then they sang Don't let me down– a beautiful song in which John goes straight to Yoko, calls for his help and declares that for the first time in his life he fell in love. Third was I have a feelingThe theme, which, as in the first epochs, was really divided in her authorship by Lennon and McCartney: they combined fragments of two songs, in which, like in this cathedral, there was a modern song, which Day in life; One after 909 it was a song they composed since 1963; last new topic was Dig ponyJohn's foolishness performed masterfully. The presentation (as recorded in the film) closed again come back,
The cameras, which did not point to the musicians, allowed the dramatic flesh to be given to these 22 minutes of music. The point is not that recording the historical presentation of four of them would not be enough. But the director did a great job of capturing the passers-by reaction when they hear the buzz of the first notes and discover that they are the audience of the Beatles concert. We see that the terraces are inhabited (in a memorable plan, an elderly man with a pot and a pipe between his lips climbs the fiery staircase to get closer to the musicians) that people are crowding on the sidewalks and transport will collapse in a few minutes, on I have a feelingThe director leaves a few testimonies to passersby. Most are fascinated by the historical event, it can be assumed that there are more suitable places for performance in this music, and the elderly person is alarmed with a cry: “I want this damned noise to stop once and for all. Even the Beatles did not reach unanimity.
Great Drama Trick – Police PresenceMost likely, inspired by an episode of the Jefferson plane in New York. The decision to have cameras in the street and in the lobby bore fruit. In the first topic, we see several restless bobby on the street. As the play progresses, more and more come, they talk to each other, they plan actions.
While in the last song they do not enter the building and do not interrupt the performance. This police presence is alarming and very well said. But the facts would have been far from those recorded in the film. The show lasted 43 minutes, which means that the police allowed the Beatles to have a good time. Some witnesses also say that since it was the most famous group in the world, one of its direct officers was told that it would take the police ten minutes before they broke in (somehow) into the building. It is said that during these ten minutes, the records about the number of operations of the bathroom chains in the building were beaten: When the police entered, there were no prohibited substances.
The disc and documentary were renamed to Let it beIt was the last album that appeared on The Beatles a few days after announcing its dissolution as a group. But the last one to be recorded was the master Abbey roadanother masterpiece. After the appearance Abbey road the 1969 principles cassettes were handed over to Phil Spector, the producer, who attached his “wall of sound” to the recordings to the disgust of Paul.
Fifty years ago, the Beatles performed live for the last time. On the terrace for several passersby who could only hear them; staging to close his film and, at the same time, tangible, indisputable and lifelong proof that the chemistry between the four was invincible, and, undoubtedly, her fate was immortality.
