Prevalence of Social Evils Caused by Stress
Twice as many men as women have taken to drinking. One out of every five men says that they drink on most days after work. These disturbing figures have been revealed in a survey by Medicash, a healthcare plan cash provider. The Chief Executive of this company Sue Weir says that this disturbing trend is a direct effect of stress at the workplace. She says that initially stress is a way of making employees perform. When this pressure builds up the employee feels burdened and trends such as drinking, smoking, health problems et cetera arise.
The survey has also revealed vast differences between the impact of stress on men and women employees. These are:
31% of the women feel stressed whereas only 24% of the men feel they are stressed.
69% of the women suffer from headaches, a major side effect of stress. Only around 45% of the men have the same problem.
Insomnia plagues almost 60% of the women whereas only 40% of the men have problems sleeping.
Men are four times are likely as women to take sick days off from work due to stress.
Both men and women employees say that bad manners and impolite behaviour incite them to lose their temper outside the workplace. Men say that the stress they experience is majorly due to their enormous workload. Women say that in the course of work, they have to deal with difficult customers and clients. This is the reason for most of their stress.
Ms. Weir says that the only way of combating stress is to incorporate healthy eating habits and to include regular exercise in the daily routine. She also advises counselling or just talking to any person to relieve stress.
