Although it is commonplace that behind charitable institutions are big corporations that practice philanthropy because of corporate social responsibility, families that have accumulated immense wealth have also begun to reach out to do their part in empowering and helping society.

It is not only the wealthiest of clans that do charity works. The following families are no Carnegies or Rockefellers in terms of wealth. They have proven though that one does not need to own big corporations and successful business ventures to make significant contributions to mankind.

Jeff and Aimee Harris donated all their possessions to charities–furniture, cars, clothes, appliances, and even their children’s toys - to live a life of voluntary simplicity in Vermont.

Dr. John Connolly and his family gave to charity the family’s 90-hectare shoreline property in Miscou Island. The recipient of the land, the Natural Conservancy of Canada, vows that the land will be used as a protected habitat for piping plovers and other migratory birds.

The Avery family of Round Rock, Texas, gave the Seton Williamson Foundation $1 million to help the foundation’s proposed construction of the Seton Williamson Medical Center. The Avery Family, composed of siblings Charles, John, Nelson, and Christina, gave the $1 million in memory of their parents, Charles and Lucille. In recognition of the Avery’s contribution, the hospital’s chapel will be named in honor of Charles and Lucille Avery.
