Spending a Mission Gap Year Volunteering for a Church
Numerous people end up at a time where the next step is not an obvious one. Perhaps you’re a student who’s recently graduated, or maybe you’ve recently retired from work. Maybe you’ve recently been laid off from work and are discouraged at having no job, but equally discouraged by the variety of work opportunities available. During times like these, we often look for an alternative course of action. A group called DNA (dna-uk.org) are proffering a “third way” - to spend your mission gap year in a Christian church.
DNA are offering an 11 month long experience of complete submergence into Christian Discipleship, ranging from October to August. This is seen as a “year in with God, not a year out.”, needing the participant to live in a Christian environment - either within your own church if you already belong to one, or a specified church if you’re not presently a fellow member of a church. Your typical day will involve assisting with the day to day projects of the church, and to be trained by its fellow members in bible studies. The course assures faith in action, so those who enroll can anticipate a very practical experience of Christian faith, and not merely the theoretical study.
Further plus points of the studies include:-
- being challenging, radical and life changing
- faith in action; what you’ll learn is what you’ll actually do
- equipping you for church-based leadership
- your development in skills, understand and character
- dependence on the person and power of the Holy Spirit in and through you
- supplying an accredited programme via the National Open College Network
- relational, non-religious Christianity; it’s fun!
There are three types of course open : Track 1 is the most popular access point to DNA - it is the most complete DNA expereince. The over-whelming bulk of individuals decide that this is the best pick for them. Track 2 is more appropriate to you if taking a whole gap year is not practically viable. This could be for issues like your workplace or family commitments. Track 2 consequently provides some flexibility. Track 3 proffers individuals the chance of coming in to be with us for as many specific training sessions or days as they wish.
