D’s Diner - Early Survival Horror
“D” was an early survival horror game, a game released by WARP in 1996. Some credit as having an influence on Resident Evil. Since it was released just prior to the more famous game, this is hard to maintain.
D involved the story of Laura Harris, a university scholar in the L.A. area. When her father, Dr. Richter Harris, goes on a killing rampage at a nearby hospital, Laura goes to investigate. This leads Laura into a castle in another world.
It is eventually learned that the Harris family has a long and sordid past. To win the game, Laura must kill her father, who has transformed into a demonic entity.
The game was originally created for the now defunct 3DO console. It was converted over for the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn consoles, as well as PC use. The game was a critical and commercial failure in the United States.
Since that time, D has gained a cult following. It had the bloodiest graphics at the time. The game also touched on taboo subjects like cannibalism. It spawned both a sequel (D2) and a spinoff, Enemy Zero. The storytelling elements in the D Series, along with its advanced characterization, would influence later games.
D was originally known as D’s Dinner Table in Japan. A bad translation caused it to be known as D’s Diner in America.
