EDF: Carbon Offsets for Sale

EDF, or the Environmental Defense Fund, seeks to find ways to protect and preserve the environment. This non-profit environmental advocacy group deals mostly with issues related to ecosystem restoration, ocean protection, as well as human health. Its greatest concern however is global warming and the numerous dangers it poses to our environment and health.

One of the solutions they advocate is the use of carbon offsets in neutralizing carbon emissions in the atmosphere. A carbon offset refers to an emission reduction credit taken from a separate project. It results in lesser carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Examples of sources for carbon offsets include methane capture from landfills or livestock and the installation of alternative energy systems like solar, geothermal, biomass, or small hydro.

Carbon offsets are sold and bought. One of EDF’s newest projects is CarbonOffsetList.org, an online site meant to primarily give consumers and businesses an opportunity to acquire carbon offsets. This is a collaborative project between EDF and a committee of science and policy experts. The online resource has 11 emissions reduction projects found in various areas in the country.

It only takes around 27 cents a day or $100 a year to purchase carbon offsets. Nevertheless, even that small an amount is enough to help neutralize our climate.
